What to Expect

The Khushwant Singh Literary Festival is a labor of love dedicated to honoring the legacy of Khushwant Singh—author, scholar, journalist, and iconoclast—by exploring the values he championed and addressing his concerns.

This year’s theme, Resilience and Renewal, reflects Singh’s belief in the transformative power of ideas to inspire both personal and societal growth. KSLF is a convergence of minds celebrating this theme by highlighting ideas that foster resilience and spark renewal in our lives. The festival raises awareness for the causes Singh supported, such as women's roles in society, Indo-Pakistan friendship, and ecological preservation. His authoritative history of the Sikhs and profound understanding of religion—despite his atheism—illustrate his dedication to deepening and renewing our understanding of the world.

The festival is also a tribute to the young Indian soldier, providing them with opportunities to read, grow, and explore their passions. This aligns with the festival’s theme, offering a platform for resilience and renewal similar to Singh’s own journey. Kasauli, his summer retreat for over fifty years, is where he created much of his work, including newspaper columns syndicated in about twenty publications, translated into 17 Indian languages, and over a hundred and fifty novels, including non-fiction, all from Raj Villa.

Profits from the festival will be reinvested into preserving Kasauli and its surroundings and supporting the education of the girl child, embodying the spirit of renewal through community support and environmental stewardship. KSLF, held annually in October, is organized entirely by volunteers who are devoted to Kasauli and are friends of Khushwant Singh.
